On arriving in west London this summer, Layton Nicholls knew the move would bring challenges.
Leaving behind family, friends, and the environment he had known at Liverpool, the first-year scholar had to adapt quickly to life at Brentford — and he’s already making a strong impression.
The 16-year-old has featured regularly for Brentford Under-18s this season, including matches against Fleetwood Town and Mansfield, and is settling into academy life with maturity.
“I’ve dealt with the move really well,” said Nicholls. “Everyone here is very friendly, and the coaches and players have made me feel welcome. The biggest change has been moving into Under-18s football. You need to be more mature and develop quickly, but it’s been something new and exciting for me.”
Moving away from home is one of the biggest adjustments for any young player, but Nicholls has found comfort in the support system around him.
“My digs family are really caring and kind. They check up on me every day, which I really appreciate. There have been moments where I’ve missed home, but the club have been fantastic. They’ve given me things to help me in those moments, and that support has been massive.”
One of the highlights so far has been the opportunity to train with Brentford B. “As a first-year scholar, that was a huge experience,” he admitted. “It gave me a taste of the level I want to reach and showed me what it takes to get there.”
Nicholls’ journey into goalkeeping has not been a traditional one. He began his football career at Liverpool as a centre-back before transitioning into a goalkeeper during the foundation phase. Now, he is developing into a reliable shot-stopper, comfortable with the ball at his feet and confident in building play from the back.
“Being a goalkeeper now feels completely natural to me,” he said. “I want to keep improving, especially in areas like my positioning and communication, because they’re so important in the modern game.”
Beyond his technical growth, Nicholls places a strong emphasis on the type of person he wants to be.
“I want to be someone who is reliable and a leader. I want to be approachable and lead by example. For me, it’s not just about developing as a footballer but also as a person.”
Those qualities are already evident to coaches and teammates, with Nicholls quickly establishing himself as someone who can be trusted under pressure. His maturity, both on and off the pitch, is setting the foundation for a promising career.
As he continues to adjust to life in west London, Nicholls is focused on the opportunities ahead. “I know I’m at the start of my journey, but I want to make the most of every moment. Whether that’s with the Under-18s, training with the B team, or just developing day by day, I’m determined to keep pushing myself.”
For Brentford, the arrival of Nicholls represents both potential and promise. For the player himself, it’s a chance to build a future defined by resilience, leadership, and growth.
