Brentford goalkeeper David Raya has talked of his "dream" of going to the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup. The Spanish international represented his country for the first time earlier this year. And in an interview with West London Sport just before the end of the season, he talked about the tournament in Qatar.
David has one Spain cap to his credit. He was in the squad for four recent matches played by Spain in the UEFA Nations League but was an unused substitute. That came at the end of his first season in the Premier League with Brentford, which was interrupted by injury.
David spoke at length to West London Sport before the 2021/22 campaign came to a close. He talked about the season, which ended with The Bees in 13th in the Premier League, and his journey. Also about international football.
“I was over the moon to make my debut at home. It was in Cornella, where I used to play, and I grew up there, so all my family was there. I probably had between 60 and 70 people coming to watch the game,” he said. “Obviously every footballer has their own targets and their own dreams. For example, when I came to England I said ‘I don’t want to move from England until I play in the Premier League’, so I got that this year.
“My next step was I wanted to be called up for Spain and obviously it happened. Obviously the next step is to play for Brentford and end up as high as possible. Obviously playing in the World Cup is a dream that every footballer has. To represent your country in a World Cup, that’s the biggest stage for football."
