Brentford B’s Kyreece Lisbie praised the side’s spirit and work rate as they came away from their first Premier League Cup fixture with all three points after beating Blackburn Rovers Under-21s 3-2 away from home on Tuesday evening.
The 18-year-old got the winner on the night as he added to first half goals from Alex Gilbert and Nico Jones with a late strike.
“I want to thank God and my teammates, the boys worked so hard today, I can’t explain how joyful I am right now,” said a delighted Kyreece.
“Today isn’t about me, it’s about all the boys, everyone worked hard and ran their socks off and I think we deserved the three points. I’m so proud of the boys.”
The young Bees had to sustain a period of pressure in the early stages of the match as they were forced to defend and make blocks with Matthew Cox making a couple of saves too. As the first half progressed, though, the side began to find their rhythm as they scored twice before the break and they really got going in the second period as they created numerous chances.
Kyreece continued: “In the first 20 minutes we were really under pressure, but we weathered the storm. They had the ball around 80% of the time but the boys kept running and working hard and we dug in to get the win.
“We needed that (the second goal); we felt the game should have been 1-1 at half-time but we were fortunate to make it 2-1. We then conceded after the break as well and we had to bounce back several times today, we’re delighted to go back with three points.
“As the game went on it started to open up. Gilbz (Alex Gilbert) and Trev (Ryan Trevitt) started to get into pockets and that’s where we found our joy and the game continued to open up which we exploited and, when the moment came, I took my opportunity.
“This game was so tough and we all know the importance of the Premier League Cup, so to open our campaign with a win is delightful.”
