We are committed to taking active steps to promote environmental sustainability. Our approach is built around the following five elements:
To ensure that we're living up to our sustainability mission, we'll be monitoring and reporting on our progress regularly.
We have already implemented a number of measures to support management of our strategy. We have established a Sustainability Working Group with representation from across the Club. The Sustainability Working Group acts as a key committee, engaging with our employees.
We have hired a Sustainability Manager who will play an important role in implementing our sustainability strategy. This new role plays an important role in promoting environmental sustainability across all areas of our operations. The Sustainability Manager is responsible for developing and implementing sustainability strategies and initiatives, monitoring our environmental performance, and ensuring that we meet our sustainability targets. They're also be responsible for engaging with our fans and the wider community to promote sustainable practices and inspire positive change.
We're committed to reducing our carbon footprint and to supporting climate change mitigation and adaptation.
The design of the stadium was conducted with its carbon footprint in mind. When we made our final plans we changed the design to reduce the amount of steel in the design and the amount of concrete used. We also increased the amount of photovoltaics installed on the roof, providing renewable energy contribution to the stadium operations with excess energy being sent to the Grid. Our North Stand interior wall is built from bricks that we recycled from the stable block on site that was demolished as part of the new stadium development.
We have a coordinated approach to implementing energy efficiency across our different sites. We are compliant with relevant national legislation, including ESOS and SECR, and the stadium has a BREEAM certificate of “Very Good” with a comprehensive Building Management System (BMS) in operation which provides detailed monitoring of energy consumption.
Our catering supplier, Levy, has a commitment towards achieving net zero carbon by 2027. They are actively partnering with suppliers that use locally sourced, seasonal products, and provide plant-based options. Brentford FC know that the production of meat can substantially increase our carbon emissions, and so we are looking for methods to reduce this impact. Other initiatives include highlighting the carbon footprint of meals to guests and sharing unused food items that can be reused.
The recent development of the Robert Rowan Performance Centre was constructed using reusable, low-carbon construction materials (for example, the gym is a wooden, reusable, structure). This minimised energy used during construction and will reduce our ongoing carbon footprint.
We recognise that the travel choices of our fans, players and staff also contribute to our carbon footprint. The location of the stadium supports active travel through easy pedestrian access and bike racks as well as access to good public transport options. We conduct regular post-match fan surveys, and from our analysis, 63% of home fans this season either use public transport, walk or cycle to attend home matches, and 35% travel by car. We have also installed electric vehicle charging points at our training ground, and we have set up a cycle to work scheme to encourage employees to commute by bicycle.
We're committed to promoting circular economy practices throughout our Club and managing resources sustainably. This means reducing waste and promoting recycling wherever possible.
We have already implemented a number of measures to improve our circularity and ensure that we are re-thinking the way we use our resources.
Brentford is committed to eradicating single-use plastic across different club sites. Biodegradable paper pint cups and reusable plastic glasses are used in bars where there is no glassware and fully recyclable paper cups are used in places where there is no draught beer. Single-use plastic cups are not used on matchday. Paper straws have also replaced plastic, and single-use plastic stirrers and sachets have been removed. Sustainable wooden cutlery and bowls/plates are also in use.
We have a waste management programme in place across the club and we aim to reduce food to landfill through the use of the ‘Too Good To Go’ app to pass on unused food.
We will support the regeneration of natural habitats and a healthy living environment.
We have formalised our approach to nature in our Nature Strategy, published April 2026.
At the stadium, we reduce water consumption through the use of low-flow fittings for WCs, wash hand basins, urinals, and showers. We have installed three pure water stations around the stadium site, which provide filtered and mineral-enhanced chilled water from our regular mains supply.
At the training ground, seven low water consumption appliances have been installed to aid circularity and water efficiency.
Ecological enhancements have been implemented within the site boundary of the stadium, which contribute towards the wider development's increase in ecological value.
We know that we can't achieve our sustainability goals alone. That's why we're committed to collaborating with our colleagues, players, stakeholders, fans, and the local community through awareness raising, training, and outreach initiatives.
Within the Club’s head-offices, we have developed our own environmental policy to help drive environmental objectives within the workspace, for example, minimising waste and operational energy.
A highly publicised and well received initiative to roll over kit has been welcomed from fans, not only saving costs for fans but creating less environmental impact.
Over the years, Brentford FC have also engaged with a number of partners that aim to promote sustainability. Lofbergs, Fuellers, University of West London and Levy are amongst those with strong environmental policies and credentials. From these partnerships, we have built campaigns to support the Club to be more environmentally conscious. Utilita’s nationwide ‘Football Rebooted’ campaign is another initiative, which aims to rehome at least one million pairs of quality football boots across the UK, to stop them ending up in landfill.
The Brentford FC Community Sports Trust has also recently launched its own sustainability strategy which aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
We have developed our Environmental Sustainability Policy to outline our commitment to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable practices in all aspects of our operations. Through the policy, we aim to contribute to a healthier planet while enhancing the efficiency and long-term sustainability of our organisation. You can read the policy here.
